up to the Massachusetts SCRABBLE® Clubs
SCRABBLE® Enthusiasts of Boston is a social SCRABBLE® club organized via Meetup.com. Meetings are on the first and third Sundays of the month starting at 12 noon and lasting to until at least 2:30 p.m. most weeks; you may stay until the restaurant closes at 6 p.m. They are usually attended by 6-14 people.
Currently all Meetups are hosted at Au Bon Pain at 18 Holland Street in Davis Square, Somerville, MA, accessible by buses and the MBTA Red Line. The restaurant offers free wi-fi, and the only electric outlets are far from the playing area.
The level of play is above living room play, but below that of a SCRABBLE® competition. The average NASPA rating for the club (if everyone were rated) would probably be around 800-900 for the regular attendees. Regular attendees are familiar with all of the two-letter words and many three-letter words, although lots of new people may come once or twice and haven't memorized any words. Most games are one-on-one. We use a paper copy of the Official Tournament and Club Word List (2014) for judging challenges. However, we don't use clocks and generally the attitude is friendly to chatting and kibitzing, as appropriate for our coffee shop setting. We sometimes play other word games, including Bananagrams® and Boggle®.
We are welcoming to newcomers to the area who want to meet new people, as well as people who want to work on developing their SCRABBLE® skills and aren't prepared for the tournament scene yet. Folks happy playing online but wanting a bit more competition in real life would probably be very comfortable. The age range of attendees is wide.
The cost for attending (as of 2016) is $2 per visit or $15 per year, just enough that it usually covers the monthly Meetup.com dues. Space can sometimes be limited, so you are required to register at Meetup.com using the link below. Registration is completely free.See: http://www.meetup.com/Scrabble-Enthusiasts-of-Boston/
